What the $^@# is Wrong?

Christianity Forgotten

I remember back in Sunday School about how we were taught to love another as we loved ourselves, know that God loves us all for who we are, and to be kind to others.  It seems like that notion is slipping away.

When I get mad sometimes, I think back to this Bible verses together.

Luke 6:35

“But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

When one looks at those two verses together, you see the message that was trying to be laid out.  It’s a simple message of peace.

Today, it seems like the hate filled political agenda has gotten the Christian Right in a downward spiral and they don’t even realize it. People that call themselves Christian are forgetting the teachings of Jesus. Jesus spoke of peace, love, and tranquility, but all you see today are “Christians” speaking about unequal human rights, burning Korans, and calling for a religious war.

Here is one quote from a Fox News Comment on an article regarding the purchase of our own firearms back from North Korea.

If Jesus would have had one of these, he would never have been crucified, and for sure, there would never have been any turning the other cheek nonsense. Every good Christian man, woman and child in America should have a gun. – Homer1320 on FoxNews.com

Let’s think about this.

Was Jesus a violent man?   No

Was Jesus a vindictive man?   No

Was Jesus wanting his followers to take arms?   No

What this person thinks about Jesus is completely opposite of what Jesus and his disciples taught.  This person is taking a conservative ideology and trying to make it into a Christian value.  It just doesn’t work like that.   It’s supposed to be that you take pure Christian values and apply them to life to try and make life better for everyone.

One main talking point by the Christian Right is that this country was found on Christian Values and that we need to take our country back.  There is one major flaw, The United States of America was not founded upon Christianity.

President John Adams and the U.S. Senate in 1797:

“[T]he government of the United States of America is not founded in any sense on the Christian religion. . . .” (From “The Treaty with Tripoli,” approved by President Adams and unanimously ratified by the Senate.)

In fact, a lot of the Founding Fathers were deist, and not Christian.

It might just be me, but today’s Christians may think that peace, love, happiness, tranquility, forgiveness, turning the other cheeck, loving thy neighbor, and loving thy enemy are just some crazy liberal or socialist ideals.  If you think that at all, you really don’t know your own religion.
